Robert Hamond Elwes (1856 – 28 January 1881) was a Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards famous for having died valiantly at the Battle of Laing's Nek, South Africa as immortalized in Elizabeth (Lady Butler) Thompson's painting, "Floreat Etona!" (1898). ==Family and Early Life==
Elwes was born in 1856〔"Burke's genealogical and heraldic history of the landed gentry of Ireland, 4th ed." edited by Bernard, Sir Burke (London, U.K.: Burkes Peerage Ltd, 1958), pp 254. Hereinafter cited as Landed Gentry of Ireland.〕 to Robert Elwes and Mary Frances Lucas at Congham House, near King's Lynn in Norfolk. He was educated at Eton College. After graduating, he joined the Grenadier Guards where he gained the rank of Lieutenant in November 1879.
